N.R.S. Medical college library is one that has no parallel & no equal at least in this state so far as the medical libraries are concerned. It has a vast collection of medical books and journals on almost all the medical and allied subjects. It is growing exponentially with addition of good number of books, journals (both Indian and foreign), CD and other non-book material year by year.
It is situated on the 3rd floor of academic building occupying a vast area. There are two consecutive spacious reading rooms that are tried to have been maintained tastefully as far as practicable in spite of major difficulties being faced due to dearth of adequate personnel. The stocks of books and journals are arranged scientifically in stack room as per . Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme (20th ed). The library maintains a very good catalogue of library materials as per AACR-2. Library Management Software SOUL(Network Version) has been installed in the library. Creation of Data Base has been started along with machine-readable form of library catalogue. The INTERNET in the library is being utilized fully by the faculties , post graduate and undergraduate students.
Necessary steps have been for revamping the Book Bank for Back ward class students. In this connection Honble Minister- In - charge Backward classes welfare department, Govt of West Bengal Sri Jogesh Chandra Barman kindly visited the library on 6th September 06. A proposal for Rs 500000.00(Rupees five lakh only) for the book bank have been handed over to Honble Minister.
The INTERNET facilities have been augmented by installing a BBVPN line in the LIbrary. The library has joined in the ER- Med e - journal consortium of Director General of Health Services (DGHS) from January 2010, ERMED is providing over 1600 medical e - journals of leading journal publishers.
History of the Library
It is needless to mention that the sanctioned strength was made 30 years back. When the numbers of books, journals and users were much less than those of today. Moreover Post Graduate courses in different disciplines have started in the college as a result Library has to cater the needs of post graduate students also. The above particulars indicate that numbers of books journals and users inversely varies with number of personnel. So to cope with the situation the reinforcement of the existing strength is essential along with the filling up of the vacant posts for the betterment of library services. The Digital Library System is emerging rapidly throught the world. In order to take advantage of the Digitilization of information system proper planning is necessary for the procurement & keeping of e- journals e- books and other major Medical information system databases. It needed to develop the infrastructure for the procurement , storage and Dissemination of the Digital Information in the library otherwise it would not be possible to cater the future fast growing needs of information.
