Ever since conversion of Sealdah Market in a panoramic building in 1864 toSealdah Municipal Hospital on 1 July, 1867 and sub5equently was named as Sealdah Medical School on 1’ December, 1873 and after a series of metamorphosis, the said school was renamed as Campbell MedicalSchool in1874 after the name of the then Lieutenant Governor, Sir George Campbell and it became a Prime Medical School in British India wherein the medium of training was a mixture of English and Vernacular.
The School was later on upgraded to a Medical College & Hospital in the name of Sir George Campbell on 1 July, 1948 and commenced its functioning
with 105 students admitted in the First Year Class. The College was affiliated to the University of Calcutta in the year 1950. Campbell Medical College & Hospital was renamed as Sir Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital with effect from 10th August. 1950 in terms of a gazette notification.This institution is regarded as a Prime Medical College in our country with having 1890 indoor beds, the largest one hospital in our State. The glorious achievement of the college administration and also of the Health Department was to enhance the admission capacity of MBBS seats from 150 to 250 in number in 201 1-2012 academic session following a meticulous Indian Medical Council Inspection and grant of permission thereafter.
Besides the college is having Post Graduate and Post Doctoral courses in 23disciplines-16 in broad specialities and 7 in Super specialities with having 91 number of seats and 4 diploma seats in Anoesthesiology. The college authority has also applied before the Medical Council of Indio for commencement of PGand Post Doctoral course in Physiology. Community Medicine, pharmacology,Microbiology, Plastic Surgery and Endocrinology with an annual intake capacityof 4 students in each course with effect from 2012-2013 academic session. Some of the MD/MS/DM/MCh degree have already been recognised while some area waiting recognition in 2012/2013, following MCI inspection during final examination.
As a wing of this institution, Nursing Training School was established in the year 1944 and at present is conducting ANM(R) and GNM courses while the Govt. College of Nursing has commenced its functioning in the year 2008 with an annual intake capacity of 50 seats in Post Basic B.Sc course. The college council has already resolved that for propagation of Nursing Education, B.Sc and M.Sc course should be introduced with an annual intake capacity of 60 students and 25 students respectively from the next academic session.
Besides this institution is conducting 7 number of paramedical courses withan annual intake capacity of 48 students who are being admitted by the West Bengal State Medical Faculty. For better patient care services, the authority is deeply considering to introduce some courses like Orthotic and Prosthetic Technician, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and similar other courses.
Furthermore creation of a few Super Speciality Departments like Gastroenterology (Medical & Surgîcal), Geriatric Medicine, Oncology (Medical & Surgical), Transfusion Medicine and Aviation Medicine are under activeconsideration. As a part of upgradation of various departments and for strengthening of PG courses, the college has receivei Central Govt. grant of Rs. 39.13 crores in this year and 1’ phase of allocation of Rs. 8.05 crore is nearly utilised for procurement of equipments and renovation works undertaken by thePWD authority. The rest of the grant when received will be utilised for modernisation of various disciplines. So far as construction works are related, It has been decided by the authority to build a 10÷2 storied building in front of the playground over an area of 26000 sqr ft for setting up of a Super Speciality wing where OPD. Indoor Wards, Investigations, Teaching Departments and OT Complex will be housed. The existing space occupied by various Super Speciality departments will be handed over to the Broad Speciality for its proper expansion in all spheres.
To cater the need of accommodation of MBBS students of enhanced number of seats, ever increasing number of Post Graduate and Post Doctoral seats, for likely commencement of Nursing courses. increasing number of Interns and House Staff in near future, the authority has decided to construct a 500 seated PG Hostel, annexed block of Boys’ Hostel (300 seats), annexed Block of Girls’ Hostel(150 seats) and so on. Similarly Nursing School and College including Hostel accommodation will be expanded in due course. Setting up of 20bedded Trauma Care Unit is under process. Similar other units are being considered by the hospital administration and the State Health Department.
In spite of imparting teaching and training to students ¡n various courses,conduction of reasonable number of training courses to the Medical Officers Nursing Personnel and Paramedical staff of various districts through various units like IMNCI(Resource Centre of this State since 2006), National Nodal Centre in collaboration with Indian Nursing Council and JHPIEGO - in the areas of Post
Partum Family Planning (PPFP) and strengthening of pre-service Nursing and Midwifery Education to GNM/ANM students, RNTCP, PPTCT, ICTC and so on, this
centre is conducting Workshop/Seminar/Scientific Session and CME Programme for up-dating of Medical Education. Working hours of the college library has been increased for proper utilisation by the students with having thousands of text and reference books, journals and internet facilities.
It is a matter of great satisfaction that the Teachers and Post Graduate students are engaged in various research projects, ICMR & CSIR Schemes and receive grants from the Department of Science and Technology. A large number of Scientific Articles are published in various national and international journals. The authority is trying hard to fulfil the dream of Professor Subhash Mukhopadhyay in setting up the Centre for Reproductive Biology in a proper manner.
